Health Insurance for Truck Drivers

What you need to know before you hit the road

If you’re a truck driver, especially an owner-operator, you carry a load of responsibilities including running a business, managing unpredictable income, and spending long stretches on the road.
Health insurance is the last thing you want to worry about when you’re putting in the miles.
At Insurance with the Beaves, we’ll help you find the right coverage that fits both your lifestyle and your budget.
Let’s walk through the most common questions we hear from drivers, whether they're traveling locally, or hauling cross-country.
Cost & Affordability: Is Coverage Even Within Reach?
Is there affordable health insurance for self-employed truckers?
Yes. While premiums have increased in recent years, there are still multiple plan options available. The key is finding one that balances monthly cost with the level of coverage you actually need—not just picking the cheapest plan and hoping for the best.
What if my income changes month to month?
That’s common. If you’re using a Marketplace (ACA) plan, you’ll want to review your income quarterly. This helps you adjust your estimated earnings and avoid surprises like having to pay back subsidies at tax time.
Can 1099 truck drivers qualify for subsidies?
Yes, eligibility is based on your household income. However, if a spouse has access to employer-sponsored coverage that meets affordability standards, that can affect your eligibility.
Will my rates increase every year?
It depends on the type of plan. Some private plans offer locked-in rates for 2–3 years. Marketplace plans, on the other hand, are likely to change annually, especially if your income fluctuates.
Coverage on the Road: What Happens Outside Your Home State?
Can I get coverage that works nationwide?
Many private plans offer nationwide networks, which can be a strong fit for truckers. Marketplace plans typically limit coverage to your home state, except in emergencies.
What if I get sick while I’m traveling?
Most plans cover urgent care and emergency room visits anywhere. Some also include telehealth services, allowing you to speak with a doctor and even get prescriptions sent to a nearby pharmacy.
Are there plans with large provider networks?
Yes. Many plans contract with broad networks of doctors and facilities. Staying in-network whenever possible helps keep your costs lower and more predictable.
Owner-Operators: What Are Your Options?
What kind of health insurance do independent truck drivers usually get?
There’s no one-size-fits-all plan. The right coverage depends on your income, health needs, and whether you’re covering just yourself or a family.
Do I have to offer a group plan if I own my business?
If you have fewer than 50 full-time employees, you’re not required to provide group coverage. If you do offer it, traditional plans often require employers to contribute around 50% of premiums.
Can I write off health insurance as a business expense?
Marketplace plans generally don’t offer the same tax advantages. Some private plans may allow partial tax benefits depending on how premiums are structured.
Am I required to use the Marketplace?
No. You can choose between Marketplace plans and private options. Each has pros and cons depending on your situation.
Family Coverage: What If It’s Not Just You?
Is family coverage cheaper through the Marketplace?
It depends on your household income and eligibility for subsidies. In some cases, Marketplace plans are more affordable. In others, private options may offer better value.
Can my spouse get coverage if I’m self-employed?
Yes. Coverage can be structured to include your spouse and dependents.
What about dental, vision, or supplemental policies?
You can add ancillary coverage like dental, vision, or even specific policies for things like cancer or critical illness. These can help fill gaps in your primary plan.
Enrollment & Eligibility: When Can You Sign Up?
What if I missed Open Enrollment?
Marketplace Open Enrollment typically begins November 1 each year. Outside of that window, you’ll need a qualifying life event to enroll. Private plans may offer year-round enrollment.
What counts as a qualifying life event?
You may qualify if you experience:
- Loss of existing coverage
- Marriage, divorce, or having a child
- Moving to a new area
- Changes in eligibility for programs like Medicaid
- Other significant life changes
What documents do I need to apply?
Typically, you’ll need identification like a Social Security number or proof of legal status, along with income information.
How long does it take for coverage to start?
Marketplace plans usually begin on the first of the month after enrollment. Depending on timing, coverage can start within a couple of weeks.
Understanding Income & Tax Credits
What income counts if I’m self-employed?
When applying for Marketplace coverage, you’ll estimate your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). This can include:
- Self-employment income (net amount after taxes)
- Wages, interest, and dividends
- Retirement income and unemployment
- Some income, like child support or certain disability benefits, is not included.
Why does MAGI matter?
Your estimated income determines whether you qualify for subsidies and how much assistance you receive. If you end up making more money than expected you may be required to pay all or a portion of your assistance back during tax time. Getting this number as accurate as possible helps prevent surprises later.
The Big Concerns: Cost, Risk, and Trust
What’s the risk of going without coverage?
One unexpected medical event can create significant financial strain. For truckers, that risk is even greater because your ability to work depends on your health.
Why is health insurance so expensive right now?
Costs have risen due to larger claims payouts and overall healthcare expenses. Insurance pricing reflects the balance between what’s paid in premiums and what’s paid out in care.
Can working with an agent actually save me money?
A good agent will review your current situation at no cost and help you compare options. Sometimes that means finding savings. Other times, it means confirming you already have the right plan and giving you peace of mind.
